What are DOC, DOCX, and ODT?

DOC is the classic Microsoft Word binary format introduced in the 1980s and widely used through Word 2003. DOCX is its modern successor, introduced with Word 2007, based on the open Office Open XML standard — it produces smaller files and is better supported across modern applications. ODT (OpenDocument Text) is the standard format used by LibreOffice, OpenOffice, and other open-source word processors; it follows the ISO/IEC 26300 standard and is not tied to any single vendor.

All three formats store rich text content including headings, tables, images, and formatting — making them the go-to choice whenever a document needs to be edited after delivery.

Why convert to a Word or ODT document?

Converting to an editable document format is useful in many everyday situations:

  • Edit locked content: Turn a PDF or plain-text file into a Word document you can revise, reformat, and annotate.
  • Cross-application compatibility: DOCX is accepted by Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, and most online editors, so sharing is seamless.
  • Open-source workflows: ODT is the native format for LibreOffice and OpenOffice — ideal if you prefer free, open-source office software.
  • Archive and collaboration: Word documents support tracked changes, comments, and revision history, making them the standard for collaborative editing.
  • Re-purposing content: Convert an HTML page or RTF report into a clean DOCX for further editing or branded formatting.

Supported input formats

The converter accepts a broad range of source formats, including PDF, RTF, TXT, HTML, ODT, DOC, DOCX, and various other document types. You can upload a file directly from your device or provide a remote URL. If you are signed in, you can also opt in to receive an email notification when the conversion is complete.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, the converter is completely free. No subscription, payment, or account is required to convert files.

What is the difference between DOCX and ODT?

DOCX is Microsoft’s Office Open XML format, natively used by Microsoft Word and widely supported across modern apps. ODT is the ISO-standard OpenDocument format used by LibreOffice and OpenOffice. Both are editable and widely compatible, but DOCX is the most universally accepted for sharing.

What happens to my uploaded files after conversion?

Uploaded files are processed on the server solely for conversion and are deleted automatically afterwards. They are not stored, shared, or used for any other purpose.

Can I convert a PDF to an editable Word document?
