or paste a link

You can either enter a remote URL (e.g. a location where the source file is located) or a local file from your device. If both, an URL and a local file are selected then one of them is ignored.

Only check this if the link points to a video portal and not directly to an audio or video file. Note: YouTube is not supported. What is ALAC?

ALAC, short for Apple Lossless Audio Codec, is a lossless audio compression format developed by Apple and released as open source in 2011. Unlike lossy formats such as MP3 or AAC, ALAC compresses audio data without discarding any information, meaning the decoded output is bit-for-bit identical to the original source. ALAC files typically use the .m4a or .alac file extension and are stored inside an MPEG-4 container, making them broadly compatible with Apple devices and software including iTunes, Apple Music, iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Why convert to ALAC?

ALAC is the preferred lossless format in the Apple ecosystem. Converting to ALAC makes sense in several situations:

  • Archiving: Store a permanent, full-quality master copy of your music library that can be re-encoded to any format later without further quality loss.
  • Apple device playback: iPhones, iPads, Apple TV, and Macs all support ALAC natively — no third-party app required.
  • iTunes & Apple Music compatibility: ALAC files import cleanly into iTunes and Apple Music, retaining metadata and artwork.
  • Audiophile listening: For critical listening or high-resolution audio (up to 24-bit/192 kHz), ALAC delivers the full dynamic range of the source recording.
  • Lossless over FLAC alternative: If you work primarily in Apple software, ALAC offers the same lossless quality as FLAC with better native support across Apple platforms.

Supported input formats

The converter accepts a broad range of common audio and video source formats, including MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, OGG, WMA, AIFF, M4A, OPUS, RA, MP2, and many video containers such as MP4, MKV, AVI, and MOV. You can upload a file from your device or provide a direct URL to a remote file for conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Is this ALAC converter free to use?

Yes, the converter is completely free. There is no signup, subscription, or payment required to convert files to ALAC.

Will converting to ALAC improve the quality of my audio file?

No. ALAC is lossless, so the output will be identical in quality to the source. If the source file was already compressed with a lossy codec such as MP3, that quality loss cannot be recovered by converting to ALAC.

What happens to my files after conversion?

Uploaded files are processed on the server solely to perform the conversion and are deleted automatically afterwards. Your files are not stored, shared, or used for any other purpose.

Can I convert video files to ALAC?

Yes. The converter can extract the audio track from many common video formats — such as MP4, MKV, or AVI — and encode it as an ALAC file.

How does ALAC compare to FLAC?

Both ALAC and FLAC are lossless audio codecs that produce identical decoded output to the source. The main practical difference is ecosystem support: ALAC is natively supported by Apple devices and software, while FLAC has broader support on Android, Linux, and most open-source players. Audio quality is equivalent.
