What is WMA?

WMA (Windows Media Audio) is a compressed audio codec developed by Microsoft and first released in 1999. It stores audio data using lossy compression by default, though lossless (WMA Lossless) and voice-optimised (WMA Voice) variants also exist. WMA files use the .wma file extension and are packaged inside the Advanced Systems Format (ASF) container. Bitrates typically range from 32 kbps up to 320 kbps for standard WMA, giving you flexibility between file size and audio quality.

Why convert to WMA?

WMA is a practical choice in several specific scenarios:

  • Windows ecosystem compatibility: WMA integrates natively with Windows Media Player, Xbox consoles, and many Windows-based media devices without extra codecs.
  • Older portable players: Many early MP3 players and in-car head units support WMA but not newer formats like OPUS or AAC, making WMA the best fit for legacy hardware.
  • Smaller file sizes at low bitrates: At bitrates below 128 kbps, WMA can retain acceptable quality with a smaller file footprint compared to older MP3 encoders.
  • Corporate and e-learning audio: WMA is sometimes required by enterprise content-management or e-learning platforms built around Microsoft technologies.

Supported input formats

The converter accepts a broad selection of audio and video source formats, including MP3, AAC, OGG, FLAC, WAV, AIFF, M4A, OPUS, RA, MP2, ALAC and many common video containers such as MP4, AVI, MOV, and MKV. You can upload a file from your device or paste a direct remote URL, making it easy to convert cloud-hosted media without downloading it first.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, the tool is completely free. No subscription, no account, and no software installation is required — just upload your file and convert.

What file formats can I convert to WMA?

You can convert from a wide range of audio formats (MP3, AAC, FLAC, WAV, OGG, M4A, OPUS, AIFF, RA, MP2, ALAC and more) as well as common video formats such as MP4, AVI, and MOV — the audio track is extracted and encoded to WMA.

Uploaded files and converted outputs are processed on the server and then deleted automatically. Your files are not stored permanently or shared with third parties.
