Convert Audio & Video to MP2 Online — Free MP2 Converter

Use this free online MP2 converter to turn audio and video files from a wide range of formats into MPEG-1 Audio Layer II (MP2) — simply upload a local file or provide a remote URL and download the result in seconds.

Source file

or paste a link

You can either enter a remote URL (e.g. a location where the source file is located) or a local file from your device. If both, an URL and a local file are selected then one of them is ignored.

Only check this if the link points to a video portal and not directly to an audio or video file. Note: YouTube is not supported. We support import from many video portals including Vimeo, Dailymotion, SoundCloud, BlipTV, Arte, Ard, 3Sat, Orf.at, Flickr, Instagram, Facebook, Metacafe, MTV, Myspace, MyVideo.de, NBA, NBC, NHL, Rottentomatoes, Sina, Slideshare, Space, Spiegel, Tumblr, Vice, ustream, Vevo, Weibo, Yahoo, ZDF, and others.

How to convert music to MP2?

  1. Choose the audio file you want to convert to MP2.
  2. Select the audio quality for the MP2 (optional).
  3. Click on "Start conversion" to convert your file to MP2.
  4. Download your MP2 file.

Advanced options

The advanced audio options allow modification of audio quality, trimming, and other audio conversion parameters.

Set the start and end time of the media file. Invalid or empty values will be ignored. In some cases trimming the audio can lead to corrupt output files. The input format is HH:MM:SS (HH: hours, MM: minutes, SS: seconds).

What is MP2?

MP2, short for MPEG-1 Audio Layer II, is a lossy audio compression format standardised as part of the MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 specifications. Developed in the late 1980s and ratified by the ISO in 1993, it predates the more widely known MP3 (Layer III) and achieves compression by discarding audio data that falls below the threshold of human hearing. MP2 operates at bit rates typically ranging from 32 kbps to 384 kbps and supports sample rates of 32, 44.1, and 48 kHz. Its encoding algorithm is simpler than MP3, which makes it computationally inexpensive to encode and decode in real time.

What is MP2 used for?

Although MP2 has largely been superseded by MP3 and AAC in consumer applications, it remains the de facto standard in several professional and broadcast environments:

  • Digital broadcasting: DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) and DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) systems mandate MP2 audio in many countries, making it essential for radio and television production workflows.
  • Video production: MPEG-2 program and transport streams — used in DVD-Video, SVCD, and broadcast master files — commonly carry MP2 audio tracks.
  • Archival and editing: Some professional editing suites and playout servers prefer MP2 because its simpler frame structure makes it easier to cut at arbitrary points without re-encoding.
  • Legacy hardware compatibility: Older set-top boxes, kiosk systems, and broadcast decoders often support MP2 but not newer codecs.

Supported input formats

The converter accepts a broad range of common audio and video sources, including MP3, AAC, OGG, FLAC, WAV, WMA, AIFF, OPUS, M4A, ALAC, RA and many video container formats such as MP4, AVI, MOV, MKV, and WEBM. You can upload a file from your device or paste a direct remote URL — no software installation is required.

Frequently asked questions

Is the MP2 converter free to use?

Yes, the converter is completely free. No subscription, account, or payment is required to convert files to MP2.

What happens to my files after conversion?

Uploaded and converted files are processed on the server and then deleted automatically. Your files are not stored permanently or shared with third parties.

Can I convert an MP3 or AAC file to MP2?

Yes. You can convert most popular audio formats — including MP3, AAC, FLAC, WAV, OGG, and others — to MP2 by uploading the file or providing a remote link.

Will converting to MP2 affect audio quality?

MP2 is a lossy format, so some audio data is discarded during encoding. Converting from another lossy format (such as MP3) involves a second lossy step, which can reduce quality further. For best results, start from a lossless source like FLAC or WAV when possible.

Why would I need MP2 instead of MP3?

MP2 is required by several broadcast and digital radio standards (DAB, DVB) and by legacy MPEG-2 video workflows. If your target system, broadcasting chain, or playout software specifically requires MP2, this converter lets you produce the correct format without specialist software.
