What is EXIF metadata?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is a standard for embedding metadata directly inside image files. When your camera or smartphone captures a photo, it automatically records technical details alongside the visual data. This can include the camera make and model, lens information, shutter speed, aperture, ISO sensitivity, focal length, flash status, date and time of capture, and — if your device has GPS — the precise geographic coordinates where the photo was taken.

Beyond EXIF, modern images often carry XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) data, which is an Adobe-developed standard used for copyright notices, editing history, and keywords, as well as IPTC data commonly used by press photographers to embed captions and bylines.

What is EXIF data used for?

  • Photography workflow: Reviewing shooting parameters helps photographers learn from each shot and identify the settings that produced the best results.
  • Photo organisation: Media management software uses EXIF timestamps and GPS data to sort and map images automatically.
  • Copyright & attribution: XMP and IPTC fields store creator name, copyright notice, and usage rights, making it easier to assert ownership.
  • Forensics & verification: Journalists and investigators check EXIF data to verify when and where an image was genuinely taken.
  • Privacy awareness: Before sharing photos online, reading EXIF data lets you confirm whether GPS coordinates or other sensitive details are embedded.

Supported image formats

This tool is powered by ExifTool, one of the most comprehensive metadata libraries available. It supports a very wide range of formats, including common formats such as JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, and WebP, as well as professional and camera-specific RAW formats including CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, ORF, RW2, DNG, and many others. HEIC/HEIF files from modern smartphones are also supported.

Frequently asked questions

Is this EXIF reader free to use?

Yes, the tool is completely free. No account or signup is required to read metadata from your images.

What happens to my image after I upload it?

Your file is processed on the server solely to extract the metadata, then deleted automatically. It is not stored, shared, or used for any other purpose.

Which image formats are supported?

The tool supports a very wide range of formats via ExifTool, including JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WebP, HEIC, and most camera RAW formats such as CR2, NEF, ARW, DNG, and many more.

Can I see GPS location data from my photo?

Yes. If your camera or phone recorded GPS coordinates in the EXIF data, they will appear in the results. This is also a good way to check whether a photo contains location data before you share it publicly.

How do I remove EXIF data from an image instead of reading it?

Use the companion EXIF Remover tool on this site to strip all metadata tags from your image before sharing it online.
